Career Mondays (CLOSED)
Dates: September 11, 18, 25, October 2, 16, 23, 30 and November 6, 13.
At the elementary level, career exposure provides students with the opportunity to build self-awareness, explore interests and abilities, and build a connection between their schooling and the workplace. Through Career Mondays, our youngest Spartans learn about a wide range of career paths through fun and engaging activities. This one-hour after school program allows our students to explore a variety of career interests found both at MHS and beyond. This program provides students with information about careers including salary ranges, required education, and interests that might lead to this career. Students participate in a hands-on activity connected to this career path. Finally, students are asked to reflect upon their experiences and consider if this career path is of interest to them.
BizTown
Dates: Tuesday, October 17 and 18 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Through a partnership with Junior Achievement of York, 5th grade students experience an immersive career focused simulation at BizTown. Prior to visiting BizTown, students learn career and life skills, such as how to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, and vote for mayor. The culminating experience takes place at BizTown in York, where students apply what they have learned and simulate a city economy.
Volunteers will work in pairs to support students at one of 14 businesses in BizTown. Volunteers will need to complete 30 minutes of online training prior to attending. Teachers will be on-site to support and answer questions. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Junior Achievement
Dates: Throughout February/March 2024
Junior Achievement Classroom Programs empower students to make a connection between what they learn in school and real world application; enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. JA volunteers deliver relevant, hands-on experiences that give students from kindergarten through high school knowledge and skills in financial literacy, careers and entrepreneurship. For this program you are provided with weekly materials and lessons in advance to review and a teacher is with you during the lesson, co-teaching alongside you. There are 5 lessons in total that run for 30-45 minutes.
